The gut is home to the enteric nervous system, also known as ENS which is separate from the central nervous system. The ENS is made up of two thin layers with more than a hundred million nerve cells in them, more than the spinal cord. These cells line the gastrointestinal track, controlling blood flow and secretions to help the GI tract digest food.

They also help us feel what is happening inside the gut. And since this "second brain" is behind the mechanics of food digestion, it can also affect our emotions and how we feel. 

In fact, 90% of serotonin is produced by the vagus nerve that runs through our gut into our brain. So if your digestive system isn't functioning properly, you won't be producing enough serotonin and therefore it will affect our mood. It can cause inflammation in the brain, which can lead to anxiety, depression, brain fog, as well as food Allergies, constipation - all of which makes it nigh on impossible for you to lose those unwanted pounds and excess weight.

Even our own bodies can produce toxins without us even knowing. If all these sources of toxins aren't properly taken care of, the build-up can cause critical hormone imbalances which may lead to serious health issues and weight gain, and could end in obesity.

As stress-induced changes in the microbial flora increases the possibility of intestinal permeability, so too can the risk of systemic and local skin inflammation. If the integrity of the gut is compromised an individual may experience skin inflammations, such as acne and rosacea.

Having a healthy gut flora makes it easier to modulate leaky gut permeability and hypersensitivity, which may occur as a result of being chronically exposed to stress. In order to achieve healthy gut flora make sure you include plenty of probiotic foods in your diet.

An increased intake of fermentable fibers such as yam, sweet potato and yucca can also help keep the gut flora within healthy levels. Most of all, find ways to better manage your stress levels in order to avoid gut and digestive health problems, and other health problems too!
